To Sash or Not to Sash

I have been really indecisive in my quilting lately. I don't know what's up with me! So, once again, I am back asking for some opinions. I have made these Map of the States blocks, a la Oh Fransson. Originally I was going to make 16 blocks, but well, I got to 8 and got sidetracked...The first 8 blocks have been pinned up to my bulletin board, so I sat down today and made one more block. 9 blocks it is!

Enter my dilemma: to sash....

or not to sash?

The blocks finish at 9 or 10 inches (I can't remember right now, and I don't have a ruler handy...), so without sashing it will make a small baby blanket, and with it will make it a bit bigger.

I'm torn. On the one hand, I like the separation of the sashing, but if I sash, WHAT COLOR? On the other hand, it looks pretty cool all smooshed together, and then I don't have to figure out what color to sash in! Heeeeelp!

I personally love the sashed look, and while I have never made a quilt so it is easier said than done sometimes... I actually like the black between it as the sash... I think that as a baby quilt it would be beautiful (lady bug theme) or as an adult... I like the quilt with no sash, however for me two things:
1. saw the first picture and fell in love with the quilt and what looks like black sashing.
2.I personally find it quite busy without the separation...

either way you did a great job!

I like the sashing but I don't know much about this kinda stuff... :) For the color of the sashing, light blue or light green maybe? There's so much brown that it might break it up? Or just brown if that's what you're going for? or that reddish/brown color that you have in there? Yeah... I'm no help. :)

What about having the blocks all smooshed together and have a nice wide border in... uh...the pink? I am a fan of white sashing though! To me the sashing isn't as important as the actual blocks, so I'd keep it simple and nondescript.

well, seeing as how I've made LOTS of quilts, I like it best with sashing. Otherwise you lose the integrity of all the work you put into the individual blocks. They stand out more with the sashing. As far as color goes, the black actually looks really good with it, but if you prefer a more muted look then pick a medium value of one of the colors in the block. If it's still too small for your taste after adding the 1-2 inch sashing, add another border of one of the prints in the blocks just double the width of the sashing. It'll be like double matting a picture in a frame. Hope this helps.

ok, I'm kinda gonna agree with everyone else. My vote is for the sashing. How bout a charcoal colour? Not as harsh as black but dark enough to make the red/ browns pop?
Good luck, I'm sure it'll look great no matter what!

I say no sashing! I love it all smooshed together and not knowing where one block ends and another starts. I like Mel's idea of a big border! whatever you do will look GREAT!!!
